College admission isn't as competitive as you might think. Fewer than 100 colleges in the U.S. are elite and highly selective, which means they accept less than 25 percent of applicants. Close to 500 four-year colleges accept more than 75 percent of applicants. And open-admission colleges accept all or most high school graduates.

Wherever you decide to go, make sure the credits you earn will transfer to another institution at http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation. The goal of accreditation is to ensure the education provided by institutions of higher education meets acceptable levels of quality. Accrediting agencies, which are private educational associations of regional or national scope, develop evaluation criteria and conduct peer evaluations to assess whether or not those criteria are met. Institutions and/or programs that request an agency's evaluation and that meet an agency's criteria are then "accredited" by that agency.
