LEARN MORE ABOUT MILITARY OPTIONS!

When it comes to learning about the Military, knowing where to start your research may seem daunting. Don't worry — there are some great resources available to help sort things out! I really like the site, www.todaysmilitary.com.

The first steps to considering service include understanding the Military's basic entrance requirements, exploring the different Service branches and deciding between enlisted and officer career paths.

The Today's Military site shows the various stages of a military career, from the joining process to training, working and taking advantage of military benefits. Start your journey at www.todaysmilitary.com.

United States Service Academies/Military Universities

The U.S. military operates many types of schools to train members of the U.S. military, foreign militaries, and civilians in certain fields. The military academies are four-year colleges that train future officers. Graduates commit to service as officers after they complete their four-year education.

The military also operates its own medical school, the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Students pay no tuition or fees, and receive a salary and military benefits.

Benefits and Commitments

  • Tuition, room, and board are free.

  • You get paid while you are attending.

  • You must serve for several years in the military after you graduate, unless you go to the Merchant Marine Academy—then you have other options.

How to Get Into a Military Academy

To be accepted into any service academy except for the Coast Guard Academy, you must first be nominated to the school by either:

  • A U.S. Senator

  • A U.S. Representative

  • The Vice President of the U.S., who can nominate applicants to any academy except the Merchant Marine Academy.

For more information, contact your SenatorRepresentative, or the Vice President.

How to Get Into the Coast Guard Academy

Submit an application directly. You don’t need to be nominated.

What are you doing this summer?

Many of the academies offer summer experiences where you can experience life at an academy without committing to join. They are all listed on Naviance Student under the "Colleges" tab in the "Enrichment" drop down menu.
